The Pincher is designed to take out explosives


I know what this looks like. You’re probably thinking that: “Oh no, it is a Star Wars/Terminator/Matrix/Battlestar Galactica/any other science fiction franchise robot that is designed to take out enemies. Are the humans its next target?”

Actually, from what I have been reading from my sources, this robot, also known as “Pincher” is designed to disable Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) from a long distance. It apparently uses rockets the size of pencils to destroy the explosive charges, which will make them burn, not explode in a process known as “deflageration”.

I’m guess that it does this via remote control with a video camera and laser pointer. Then it uses “pyrophoric” rockets for its job.

In other words, this is not designed to be a weapon. Sure, I suppose that you could reprogram the thing so its pyrophoric pencil-sized rockets could be targeted at us fleshy mortals, but you can always use something technological to hurt someone. Heck, you can do that with a dang brick.

In a way, the Pincher is unique as it is designed to disable weapons, not shoot weapons. It is designed by Israeli roboticists, and I don’t have any word about when it would be used on the battlefield.

Hands on with the Kensington Pro Fit Washable Keyboard

Whenever I get a chance to try out a keyboard to review for a post, it is my tradition to write the article about it on the keyboard itself. Most of these keyboards are all alike, and this one isn’t wireless like the Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard K750. It is USB and PS2 compatible, and it is good to go if you want to wash it. When I say washable, I mean that you can run the keyboard under a running faucet with soap, disinfectant, or bleach, and then air dry it. It’s all good, just keep the connector out of the water. I would imagine that this would be the perfect keyboard to have around in a medical facility, where germs and other bloodborne pathogens are a job hazard. It even has built-in antimicrobial material for “continuous microbe resistance”. I do have one complaint about the 104-key layout. The right Shift key is quite far away from where I normally rest my pinky finger. I suppose that I could adapt to that, but I don’t know how long it would take. T...

iPad

There’s an app for that – and in the case of the iPad (or iPad 2, it is your call), surely this must be one of the zanier ways to promote or advertise an app. The iPad Head Girl as she is called, is actually an advertising campaign by viral marketing company Thinkmodo, as they decided to come up with this unique looking piece of headgear which looks really realistic, sporting a girl covering her head with four iPads standing in a vertical manner. This ad intends to promote the launch of what used to be a girly magazine – but it has been injected with plenty of testosterone, calling it Cosmo for Guys. Since many guys love gadgets, it makes sense that Cosmo for Guys is an iPad exclusive magazine courtesy of Hearst – no newsstand copies for you to look out for!
