Netflix on the Wii needs no disc


From today onwards, Netflix members who reside in the United States and Canada are able to stream content through their Wii consoles with Netflix installed on their Wii Menu. What does this mean for the layperson? Well, the Netflix disc which was used for instant streaming on the Wii console can now be turned into a coaster. Yup, you read that right, there will no longer be the need for said disc, so you are free to do as you please with that disc – hang it on the wall, have it function as a frisbee, or even play catch with your dog. OK, so catch isn’t exactly recommended if your pooch’s got large chompers, but you get the picture.

Netflix members who fork out $8.99 monthly (somehow the Canadians have it better at $7.99 a month) and own a Wii console with a decent broadband Internet connection are now able to instantly watch movies and TV shows which will be streamed directly to their TVs as long as they download Netflix from the Wii Shop Channel. This new channel will be free, so you need not go through your wife’s approval before giving it a go. This new disc-free option will install Netflix on the Wii Menu, where it will be a whole lot more convenient for Wii owners to quickly access streaming movies and TV shows.

According to Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime, “At this time of year, consumers have a near-insatiable demand for family entertainment. And this simplified Netflix access will help bring families together more quickly, more easily and in more ways than ever before. More than 3 million Wii systems have already connected to Netflix, demonstrating how easy the service is to set up and use.” Well, if you already own the Wii and reside on that part of the world, do you think this new disc-less option is something you’ve been looking forward to all the while?

Wi-Fi Connected Power Strip

If you are like me, you have “that desk” in your house that is sort of the hub for digital information. On the desk is a laptop or desktop computer, and all kinds of accessories. Chances are, all of these devices are plugged in to a power strip, and they are a source of great power consumption on your monthly electric bill. This power strip by Japan-based Ubiquitous is the iRemoTap, and it has a built-in Wi-Fi module. The purpose of the Wi-Fi is so it can send information to connected devices in the household. The iRemoTap can automatically send out some sort of message like an email or tweet so you know how much energy that you are consuming. iMM514 ArtStation Pro

I’ve seen some products from iLuv before, and the iMM514 ArtStation Pro is good for turning an iPad into a home theater. As you can see, the iPad is mounted in an articulated swiveling arm so you can position it at whatever angle you want, in landscape or portrait mode. In case you are wondering why there is such a big base, it is because it has a huge stereo speaker. In other words, this base has bass. There is also a wireless remote for volume and skipping tracks, and it looks like there are some controls on the base for when you lose the remote. As I mentioned before, iLuv has put out a lot of Apple accessories, and I will have to admit that this is one of the most unusual that I have seen. In fact, I am not even sure what kind of aesthetic that this is. The arm thing reminds me of Technic Lego pieces. I suppose the case is like a big Lego brick without and studs on it. Nice.
